18 MAJOR TERRORIST ATTACKS IN KENYA SINCE 1998

1.      August 7, 1998 : A car bomb attack outside the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, killing 213 people and injures around 5,000 . Most victims are pedestrians and employees of neighboring buildings . Forty- four people , including 12 Americans , were killed in the embassy . An almost simultaneous explosion of a tanker truck loaded with explosives in front of the U.S. embassy in Dar es Salaam , Tanzania , kills 11 and injures 70 , all pedestrians . The Al- Qaeda takes responsibility for two attacks .


 2.      November 28, 2002 : A car bomb attack against a hotel owned by an Israeli kills 12 Kenyans , three Israelis and three suicide bombers near the port of Mombasa . Almost simultaneously , two missiles are directed at an Israeli airliner with 261 passengers on board, but miss the mark . Later , al - Qaeda assumes authorship of the two attacks .
 
3.      June 11, 2007 : A suicide bomber is the only victim of an attack in Nairobi that leaves 41 injured .

4.      June 13, 2010 : Two explosions during a meeting of evangelical Christians in Nairobi kill 6 and injure nearly 80 .

5.      December 20 2010 : three die in a grenade attack on a bus in Nairobi . Police suspect the ' Shebab ' .

6.      October 24, 2011 : grenade attacks in Nairobi kill one person and injure more than 30 . Investigators suspect the operations of ' Shabab ' .

7.      October 27, 2011 , four officials killed in a rocket attack against a government car in northern Kenya , near the Somali border .

8.      November 24, 2011 , two grenade attacks in the city of Garissa in eastern Kenya near the border with Somalia , killing three people and wound 27 , police said .

9.      January 1 , 2012 : Five die in a grenade attack and shooting in a bar in Garissa .

10.  January 12, 2012 : At least six people died in an attack on a police station in the northeast .

11.  March 10, 2012 : nine people die and 60 are injured in a grenade attack on a Nairobi bus terminal . The ' Shabab ' deny involvement .

12.  June 24 2012 : three people die and dozens are injured in an attack in a bar in Mombasa .
July 1 , 2012 : an attack on two churches in Garissa kills 18 people and injures 40 near the Dadaab refugee camp , where four foreign aid workers were kidnapped in June and her Kenyan driver dead. The workers were released on July 2 .

13.  November 18, 2012 : nine people are killed in a bomb attack on a bus in Eastleigh district of Nairobi , nicknamed "Little Mogadishu " .

14.  December 7, 2012 : A grenade attack near a mosque in Eastleigh leaves five dead .

15.  January 16, 2013 : At least four people are killed and six are seriously injured in an attack on a hotel in Garissa .

16.  March 3, 2013 , twelve people, including six policemen , were killed in attacks on security forces in the Kenyan coast before the general elections . The " Mombasa Republican Council " ( MRC , its acronym in English ) , which is fighting for secession of the coastal region , mainly Muslim , is suspect.

17.  March 28, 2013 : About 100 members of the MRC , according to police, attacked a casino in Malindi , a resort by the sea north of Mombasa . Seven people die .
 
18. September 21, 2013 : At least 59 people die and over a hundred injured in attack ' Shebab ' against Westgate Mall shopping center in Nairobi.
